Dental Crown Procedures

Your tooth may be damaged but still savable, a cap or crown can be placed over the damaged area. Implant crowns can be used to protect your tooth from further decay. Crowns can be made from different kinds of materials including, porcelain, metals, or porcelain fused to metal. The materials used allow for strength and durability and with good care can last for up to 10 years or more. It is very important that you clean your crown as you would your regular teeth with daily brushing and flossing just like you clean your natural teeth. You may need crowns if you have any of the following:

  • A large filling in a tooth
  • A broken tooth
  •  A root canal
  • A tooth badly stained or out of line.

Be careful with your crowns and replacement teeth as they may be weaker than your natural teeth so please DO NOT:

  • Bite down on hard objects.
  • Use your teeth to cut or open things.
  • Do these things with your natural teeth either.

There are many different procedures used when creating and placing a dental cap within an individuals mouth. In most cases it is made with an impression made of your tooth so it can be used as a mold to fit a temporary crown over the damaged area. The reason for the temporary implant is to protect your tooth while the final and permanent implant is made. Temporary crowns may have some discoloration or odd shape. Your permanent implant will not have these imperfections. Local anesthetics are used on the area and then the tooth or teeth are filed down to make room for the new crowns. At that point another mold is made of the filed-down tooth and the nearby teeth. Then the temporary crowns are then situated over the affected tooth or teeth. The mold is sent to a dental lab where the permanent crown is custom made. When your dentist receives your crown back from the lab the temporary cap is taken off and replaced with the permanent one. Then an inspection is made to make sure that the crowns fit right and that the shape and color are a good match. If everything is satisfactory the crowns are cemented into place. Your tooth will look and function just as your original natural tooth. These steps are the most common when creating crowns, but your tooth or teeth may require special or additional care. You may also need orthodontic treatment or gum treatment which may consist of other procedures. It may take more than 2 visits to the dentist’s office, or your visits may be a bit lengthier. The level of dental care or treatment may vary according to your individual needs!
