Dental Check Up Exams

Do you have a tooth ache or achy gums? Have you not seen a dentist in a while? Routine dental visits aid in prevention, treatment, and detection of decaying teeth, periodontal diseases, and soft oral tissue disease.  Frequent check ups will help maintain better oral heath. Why do you need regular dental check ups? Check ups provide you with regular cleanings, x-rays, and oral health prevention. Usually, dental cleaning and x-rays are included in your heath insurance and are free. Also, receiving a dental exam, the dentist will inform you of any other future problems of your oral health. A pertinent part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and image is proper oral health.  A clean bill of health is incomplete when oral diseases and craniofacial conditions are present.

Contact a Local Dentist in your area for a check up to ensure your oral heath.

A complete dental examination should include the following:

  • A soft tissue examination
  • A screening and examination for periodontal diseases
  • A detailed charting of cavities
  • A detailed charting of existing restorations (fillings and crowns)
  • A detailed charting of other tooth conditions

Note: Prevention is best accomplished with fluoride and dental sealants.

In a proper dental check-up, a visual check as well as manual feeling of the palate, tongue, floor of the mouth, cheek insides, and throat are part of through inspection of mouth’s soft tissue.  Along with the basic oral cavity inspection, a check-up of lymph nodes on the face, head, and neck will occur.  In the case of inspecting for periodontal diseases and other forms of gum disease, a dentist will measure the gum tissue of a patient using a periodontal probe in most instances.  The final aspect of a thorough dental inspection is the review of all teeth surfaces.  This examination notes the presence of possible decay and assesses prior dental work.  The importance of proper dental work cannot be understated; oral and pharyngeal cancers will cause innumerable costs, can disfigure patients, and in nearly eight thousand instances annually, can kill a patient.

Warning: Tobacco and heavy alcohol use are major risk factors for oral cancer.

X-rays are an important part of a dental check-up.  Seeing cavities that have developed in hard to spot regions or loss of bone underneath the gums is frequently spotted through trained X-ray use.  In the case of children, untreated teeth can cause significant pain and tooth loss.  Tooth loss and oral health issues can cause many problems in school, psychological issues, and low self-esteem.  For this reason, proper care of even primary teeth in children is vital before the emergence of permanent teeth.  Establishing good oral hygiene habits and preparing a proper environment for permanent teeth to emerge is key to a child with a health smile.
